
Volunteer With Us
The stroke recovery support volunteer will have a direct role in supporting participants with program activities including light exercise, brain games, and supportive discussion. The volunteer will have the opportunity to lead exercise class, cognitive games, speech group, and facilitated discussion. Many volunteers have a personal connection to stroke recovery or are interested in health care.
Tasks and Responsiblities
Attend stroke recovery meetings in-person
Collaborate with the coordinator for preparation and planning of activities
Communicate with the coordinator and other volunteers in a timely manner
Lead and facilitate engaging and interactive activities for all participants such as various cognitive games and crafts
Safely lead small group chair exercise sessions
Facilitate speech group by using supportive communication techniques
Build meaningful and therapeutic relationships with participants and other volunteers
Willingness to learn new facilitation and communication techniques
Contribute ideas towards improving the program
Help set up the room including moving tables and chairs
Commitment
Every Friday or Fridays bi-weekly from 9:45am - 12:30pm
Minimum commitment of 6 months, preference to volunteers able to commit to at least 1 year

Reports to the coordinator
Location
In-person at a community center in Burnaby
Qualifications
18 years of age or older
Education and/or experience in community services or related field an asset
Knowledge of or experience with individuals impacted by stroke and communication disabilities an asset
Ability to give and follow instructions
Strong interpersonal, listening, and communication skills
Self-directed, independent, willing to ask questions
Reliable, understanding, and respectful
Team-oriented, collaborative

Application Timeline
Step 1
Fill out the application form and allow 1 week for a reply.
Send your up to date criminal record check. If you don’t have on just let us know and we can help you get one.
Step 2
There will be a brief 15-20 minute informal interview to learn more about you and talk more about why you're interested in volunteering.
Step 3
If successful, there will be 1-2 orientation meetings where you will be able to attend the program, learn how to facilitate sessions, and get to know the participants.
